These are some of the statistics that are listed on the American Cancer Society website:
"Secondhand smoke can cause harm in many ways. In the United States alone, each year it is responsible for:
- An estimated 46,000 deaths from heart disease in people who are currently non-smokers
- About 3,400 lung cancer deaths as a result of breathing secondhand smoke
- Other breathing problems in non-smokers, including coughing, mucus, chest discomfort...
- 50,000 to 300,000 lung infections (such as pneumonia and bronchitis) in children younger than 18 months of age, which result in 7,500 to 15,000 hospitalizations annually"
A similar scenario happens when we witness an event in real life: an argument between two people, someone hurting somebody else, someone having an accident, listening to someone ranting....When this happens, we feel as if a force has penetrated our field, all the way to our bone marrow. It goes straight into us to the point where we cry, even though we, personally, are safe, but just seeing it makes us react as if it had happened to us. In reality, it is happening to us by transfer. It is called emotional contagion. It can spread rapidly like a virus. Have you ever seen an angry crowd going mad as everyone around gets sucked into the energy and joins in? In this case, the negative energy multiplies exponentially.
Negative emotions can be compared to cigarette fumes. "He is fuming" is, by definition describing a state of resentment or vexation. Can we suffer from the secondhand fuming? We certainly can. I am sure all of us have had experiences like these where we felt totally invaded by someone else's anger, anxiety, fear, helplessness..etc. We can absorb all these emotions through our energy field as the walls of the energy field are permeable.
I could not find any statistic on the damage caused by secondhand negative emotions but I am sure that it is quite considerable. It would be hard to measure because it is all done on the energetic level. That is why people are so very unaware of it although it is very real.
I became more aware of the damage it can cause when I started doing Emotion Code sessions. During a session, we can find out through muscle testing what emotion is causing the client's problem. Once the emotion is identified, we can find out how old the client was when it first manifested. At that point, we can ask where it came from: from the client himself or from someone else. In quite a few cases, it came from another source: a parent, a friend, a teacher, or even through a memorable interaction with a complete stranger... When the client, even years back, had a strong emotional experience such an emotion can get trapped in the subconscious and continue to bother that person for years to come. The subconscious is like a giant computer data base and each emotion is comparable a file. Unless those sabotaging files are identified and retrieved, they will continue being active on our database even though we don't like it.
The only way to stop that is to retrieve them.
I had a session recently with someone who has been carrying the secondhand emotion of guilt for 30 years. This is just one example among many others. If we could look at ourselves, from an energy point of view, and see all the excess baggage we have taken on through our life and are now carrying it would dawn on us that this is the reason we may feel heavy and uninspired.
Life can be compared to climbing a mountain: there are challenges going up those hills, going down through the valleys and up again, trying to conquer new heights. Did you ever wonder how much easier the climb would be without the extra accumulated baggage?
Just imagine how much better you will feel without them.

I experienced, just this after a weekend in New Orleans, LA. When I returned home from my weekend, I felt a heavy energy around me. I had a quick session with Doris and the emotion that was revealed after muscle testing was shock. Makes sense to me... I live in my little peaceful world with my little peaceful friends and then I take myself to New Orleans. There are alot of mixed energies there, especially after the hurricane Katrina. After the release, fascilitated by Doris, I instantly felt better. Her work work with the emotion code is the "real

Yes, Stephanie, your experience coming from New Orleans is a great illustration of secondhand emotion. Thank you so much for sharing it here!
